about

“Like sitting on the pebbled lakeside, feet dipped in cool water, staring at a clear sky, Ian Flanigan’s new album Shades of Blue inspires a nostalgic sentiment akin to wistful escapism. Like the love child of Eddy Vedder and John Mayer, Flanigan’s style and sound is reminiscent of both but still entirely his own, and his new music typifies his distinctiveness. The whole album plays like one long, dynamic song…but in a very good way. There are shifts and changes, but all operate within the confines of a cohesive theme: the intense desire to quell an all-encompassing homesickness. The music, however, is not melancholic; the chord progressions and key changes are forlorn yet optimistic, filled with an uplifting air of forthcoming reunion. The songs are uncomplicated while still musically complex, with intricate guitar work costarring alongside vocals whose words resemble poetry more than lyricism, occasionally being joined by a gentle string accompaniment and/or percussive punctuation. It is emotional without being weepy, vulnerable without being pitiful, and conceptual while still remaining relatable.

Ian Flanigan’s new album is an acoustic adventure into romantic reminiscence, a tuneful tribute to the adrift and their yearning to find the way back home and fall bodily into the outstretched arms of a long-missed lover. Be the listener seeking audio solace or just the pleasant ambiance of melodic confluence, Shades of Blue will provide either, or, and more, destined to become the fallback track of any lowkey afternoon.” - Lourena Ann Gallagher II, SUNY Editorial

Track Name: Always Running
Oh this sun is never really rising.
No, we’re just always running from our yesterday.
This world has been turning, turning all too fast for me.
I just want to be able to put food on the table, in my own way.
And I wonder if all of the angels above, cry for me, cry for me.
Oh no.

Nothing good comes easy.
You don’t need if it ain’t worth fighting for.
It’s all right to not belong.
You don’t want it if it feels wrong anyway.
Like my father used to say,
“don’t keep running, don’t keep running from your yesterday.”

All your time you’ve been walking on a line in between your head and your heart.
All you’ve done, what you’ve lost what you have won,
made you become what you are.
And oh ain’t it easy, when the mind gets to leaving, you find there ain’t nothing left to believe in no more.
And I wonder if all of the angels above, cry for you, cry for you.
Oh no.

Nothing good comes easy.
You don’t need if it ain’t worth fighting for.
It’s all right to not belong.
You don’t want it if it feels wrong anyway.
Like my father used to say,
“don’t keep running, don’t keep running from your yesterday.”
Track Name: No Shelter
Living ain't easy, when your mind is always
Lovin' something so bad, that just don't love you the same.
Your twisted heart just can't find its way home.
The longest road you'll ever walk, is the one you walk alone.

I've been bleeding, I've been cheating,
I've been leaving all my life for the wrong things.
I'll believe it when I see it in the air that I've been breathing,
I can feel the change.
Is it too late to make it right?

Won't you leave the light on for me.
I just want make it home.
Been so long, I've lost my way.
Out here there just ain't no shelter from the rain.

Never cared for money, or the things it buys.
Give me something I can hold, something that feels alive.
The twisted heart of this troubled world,
barely even beating, but still it can be heard.

Track Name: Willow
You call me Darlin' and I call you baby.
Out in the wild now, free from our cages.
All these reckless souls we own,
our wayfaring hearts have forsaken the road.

We've got love during bright,
as long as your body gets next to mine,
I'm all right.
Yeah, I'm all right.
I know love will pull me through,
and bring my body back to you
where I'm all right.
Where I'm all right.

When time comes for my bones to lay amongst the dust and stone,
I'll find a way, find a way.
Back to you, the only one,
to lift me when I've come undone and guide me home.
Guide me home.

I've been walking in that dim light lately.
I've been waiting on that morning sun to rise.
Wishing you could warm this cold wind honey,
till I fid my way—I'll find my way.

We've got love during bright,
as long as your body gets next to mine,
I'm all right.
Yeah, I'm all right.
I know love will pull me through,
and bring my body back to you
where I'm all right.
Where I'm all right.

Well heaven isn't high, it's in the one beside you.
Maybe God is just another word for love.
We're standing in a moment that has never been before.
It will never come again, but it's mine and it is yours.
I would like to hold you there for all my time.
Growing old together like a tree wrapped in a vine.
Down under the earth below your water flows, and I am always reaching like the roots of the willow.

Till that sun turns black, I'll find my way back to you.
Track Name: Wildfire
Standing in a field of dead sunflowers,
with an ominous sky of dark clouds that tower up to the heavens above,
as the rain began to fall.
I closed my eyes and I thought of my baby, way back up north,
hope she's still waiting for me.
All I know, is my tired bones will break before they fall.

No, I've never been wise,
I'm still learning.
Something inside,
Keeps on buying like wildfire.
Wildfire.
No, I never give up,
but I've given in.
Lost myself out in the wind like, wildfire.
Wildfire.

Out there in the rain, there was something in the distance.
Calling out my name, I heard but didn't listen.
An evanescent light broke through the clouds, it said "fight for what you love."
I'm going back, back to see my baby.
Buying her a ring with the money I've been saving.
These tired bones of mine, they're going to break, and fall upon their knees.

No, I've never been wise,
I'm still learning.
Something inside,
Keeps on buying like wildfire.
Wildfire.
No, I never give up,
but I've given in.
Lost myself out in the wind like, wildfire.
Wildfire.
Track Name: How Long
Come tell me all your sorrow,
how you lost what you had.
How your skin's waving thin,
and you're never gunna get it back.

Step lightly in the darkness,
I'll unlock your cage.
Come find me I'll be hiding,
sleep walking in the daylight.

How long, how long,
till your fight is over?
We are, we are,
all we will ever be.
We could have it all.

Are we all, are we all,
just a part of a plan.
Everywhere we stand,
we're meant to be.
I am just, I'm just,
a shadow with a name.
just another headlight in the dark on the highway.

How long, how long,
till your fight is over?
We are, we are,
all we will ever be.
We could have it all.

All that I am is a handful of sand
in an hourglass getting low.
All that I am is a heartbeat, heart beating.
Have I become what I've always known I'd be,
lost to the light, belong to the rain.

How long, how long,
till your fight is over?
We are, we are,
all we will ever be.
We could have it all.
Track Name: Welcome Home
When they lay you in the cold, hard earth,
will you know what your time is worth?
Will you hear the angels call,
or find nothing, nothing at all.
Reincarnated like a bird on a wire,
to sing your song in a one man's choir.
You live your life like a rolling stone,
only happy when you feel alone,
only happy when you feel alone.

"I got a hole in me,"
said the Captain to the sea.
He said, "oh I envy the sky, for she is free.
She'll be the death of me, jealousy.
All my life I've been homesick for a place I don't recall.
I feel like I was born to fly, though I'm built to fall.
All my life I've been searching for a place I've never seen, but here I don't belong, or there—somewhere in between."

Broke my body for a dollar bill,
there's a hole win the cup that I'm trying to fill.
A woman's touch can heal your pain, ease your mind, and kill you all the same.
All I want is what I've earned, all I have is what I've learned.
There's nobody that can hold my soul.
I'm only happy when I feel alone,
only happy when I feel alone.

One night on the ocean,
the sea was on the rise.
The waves began to whisper,
"Captain close your eyes,
Captain close your eyes, we're here to take you home.
We will welcome you as one of our own.
We are all lost souls, happiest alone.
We welcome you,
Welcome home."
